Your membership follows the member to the counter

Zendra membership details now appear in Shopify POS, so staff can recognize members at the register and give them the service they expect in person.

For most of retail history, the membership card was the staff’s memory. The shopkeeper knew the regulars by name, remembered who took their coffee black, and waved the right people past the rope without a second thought. The “program” was a person behind the counter who paid attention.

Then commerce moved online, and membership became a database. That’s mostly a good thing — software remembers more reliably than any of us! But it created a strange gap: a brand could know everything about a member’s account online, then greet that same person at its own register like a total stranger. The membership followed them everywhere, except the one place recognition matters most: face-to-face.

Member details now show up in Shopify POS

Zendra now surfaces a customer’s membership information directly on the customer-details screen in Shopify POS. Look up or attach a shopper to the cart, open their details, and a Member Details block shows whether they’re an active member, which plans they hold, and when their access runs through — without leaving POS or switching to a tablet in the back.

To be clear about what this is: it’s a staff-facing, read-only view. Your team sees membership context at the register; they don’t sell, enroll, or change memberships from POS. (Granting and editing memberships still happens in the Shopify admin — but let us know if you sell memberships in person! We’re gauging interest in this feature.) Think of it as giving your in-person staff the same recognition your website already has.

Why recognition at the register matters

Recognition is the oldest loyalty mechanism there is, and it works because it’s a signal: we know you, and you belong here. A member who pays for access is buying that feeling as much as the perks themselves (recognition is one of the three reasons people join memberships). The trouble is that the in-person moment is exactly where the feeling tends to break. A shopper mentions they’re a member, the cashier has no way to check, and a relationship the brand worked hard to build flattens into an ordinary transaction.

Closing that gap does two things at once. It lets staff give members the service they were promised — confirming a perk, honoring member pricing, answering “is my membership still active?” with a straight answer instead of a shrug. And it quietly reinforces the member’s decision to join, because the benefit shows up in the real world, not just in an account page they rarely open.

A membership should follow the member everywhere they meet your brand — including the counter.

What your staff see

When a staff member opens a customer’s details in POS, the Member Details block shows that customer’s Zendra membership at a glance. For someone with an active membership, that’s:

  • An Active Member badge (or Inactive if their access has lapsed), so staff get a yes-or-no answer first.
  • How long they’ve been a member — a since date based on when their membership first activated.
  • A Memberships list: each plan’s name, its current status (for example active, trialing, paused, ending, cancelled, or expired), and when access ends — an expiry date, or never expires for open-ended plans.

If the customer doesn’t have a membership, the block simply reads Not a member — which is its own useful signal when someone asks about a perk they haven’t actually signed up for. And because the block is read-only, nobody can accidentally change a membership from the register; to grant, edit, or cancel one, your team uses Zendra in the Shopify admin.

How to see it in POS

The Member Details block ships with Zendra’s POS extension and becomes available once your app is up to date. Two things to check:

  1. Update the Shopify POS app on your device to a recent version.
  2. Sign in to Shopify POS as a staff user. Member details are staff-only information, so a device that’s pinned but not signed in won’t load them — if the block prompts you to sign in, that’s why.
  3. Open the customer details screen for any shopper (search for or attach a customer, then tap their name) to see the Member Details block.

Reinforce belonging in-person

The Zendra POS integration helps connect your online and offline presence. It’s most useful for a brick-and-mortar location alongside your online store. Members shop both, and the counter shouldn’t be the place your program goes blind.

However, there are a number of in-person events where the POS app also shines.

  • Pop-ups, markets, and in-person events. Bring membership context to a folding table without bringing a laptop.
  • “Is my membership still active?” The single most common counter question about a program, now answerable in a tap.
  • Confirming a perk before you ring it up. Staff can verify someone’s an active member, then apply member pricing or honor a benefit by hand — Zendra shows the status; your team applies the perk.

None of this replaces the work of designing a program worth joining. But it removes a small, persistent friction that made in-person membership feel like an afterthought — and it does so in the place where your members already expect to be known.

That’s the whole idea, really. The best membership programs don’t live in an account dashboard; they live in how a brand treats the people who chose to belong. Now that recognition reaches the counter, too, the program lives there as well.
